History & Interesting Facts

Brazos Bend State Park was once a hunting ranch, but was purchased by the State of Texas in 1977 and opened in 1984. It is only 28 miles south of Houston and is 5000 acres. 3.2 miles of the park's boundary runs along the Brazos River. Around 1845, the land was most likely used as a steamboat landing as the Brazos River was one of the main routes of commerce.
